Just Medicine PDF
By:Dayna Bowen Matthew
Published on 2015-12-11 by NYU Press

DOWNLOAD HERE !

Just Medicine offers us a new, effective, and innovative plan to regulate implicit biases and eliminate the inequalities they cause, and to save the lives they endanger. Over 84,000 black and brown lives are needlessly lost each year due to health disparities, the unfair, unjust, and avoidable differences between the quality and quantity of health care provided to Americans who are members of racial and ethnic minorities and care provided to whites. Health disparities have remained stubbornly entrenched in the American health care system—and in Just Medicine Dayna Bowen Matthew finds that they principally arise from unconscious racial and ethnic biases held by physicians, institutional providers, and their patients. Implicit bias is the single most important determinant of health and health care disparities. Because we have missed this fact, the money we spend on training providers to become culturally competent, expanding wellness education programs and community health centers, and even expanding access to health insurance will have only a modest effect on reducing health disparities. We will continue to utterly fail in the effort to eradicate health disparities unless we enact strong, evidence-based legal remedies that accurately address implicit and unintentional forms of discrimination, to replace the weak, tepid, and largely irrelevant legal remedies currently available. Our continued failure to fashion an effective response that purges the effects of implicit bias from American health care, Matthew argues, is unjust and morally untenable. In this book, she unites medical, neuroscience, psychology, and sociology research on implicit bias and health disparities with her own expertise in civil rights and constitutional law.

Solidarity as a phenomenon lies like an erratic block in the midst of the moral landscape of our age. Until now, the geologists familiar with this landscape - ethicists and moral theorists - have taken it for granted, have circumnavigated it! in any case, they have been incapable of moving it. In the present volume, scientists from diverse disciplines discuss and examine the concept of solidarity, its history, its scope and its limits.

Book A Woman’s Right to Culture PDF Free

A Woman’s Right to Culture PDF
By:Linda L. Veazey
Published on 2015-11-01 by Quid Pro Books

A Woman’s Right to Culture: Toward Gendered Cultural Rights is a new and insightful analysis of the usual meme that cultural rights in international law are at odds with the rights of women in affected societies. Rather than seeing these concepts as mutually exclusive, Linda Veazey frames cultural rights — through detailed case studies and analysis of law — in a way that incorporates and enriches the very gender-protective norms they are often thought to defeat. Adding a Foreword by University of Southern California professor Alison Dundes Renteln, the study makes the case, and supports it with illustrations over several continents and cultures, that the only way out of the dilemma is to have a gendered conception of cultural rights. The book, writes Renteln, “provides a novel interpretation of women’s human rights. This superb monograph written by political scientist and human rights advocate Dr. Linda Veazey is cutting-edge research in sociolegal scholarship concerning the status of global feminism.” Renteln concludes that the author “shows convincingly that scholars and advocates must take greater care in analyzing policy debates in the light of competing international human rights claims. In her engaging work, Veazey makes an important contribution to legal theory, public law, feminist studies, political science, and human rights scholarship. Her fascinating analysis of the interrelationship between women’s rights and cultural rights will undoubtedly be considered a classic. There is simply no book like it.” A new and important book in international human rights, and gender studies, from the independent academic press Quid Pro Books.

Book Power, Politics and the Emotions PDF Free

Power, Politics and the Emotions PDF
By:Shona Hunter
Published on 2015-06-05 by Routledge

How can we rethink ideas of policy failure to consider its paradoxes and contradictions as a starting point for more hopeful democratic encounters? Offering a provocative and innovative theorisation of governance as relational politics, the central argument of Power, Politics and the Emotions is that there are sets of affective dynamics which complicate the already materially and symbolically contested terrain of policy-making. This relational politics is Shona Hunter’s starting point for a more hopeful, but realistic understanding of the limits and possibilities enacted through contemporary governing processes. Through this idea Hunter prioritises the everyday lived enactments of policy as a means to understand the state as a more differentiated and changeable entity than is often allowed for in current critiques of neoliberalism. But Hunter reminds us that focusing on lived realities demands a melancholic confrontation with pain, and the risks of social and physical death and violence lived through the contemporary neoliberal state. This is a state characterised by the ascendency of neoliberal whiteness; a state where no one is innocent and we are all responsible for the multiple intersecting exclusionary practices creating its unequal social orderings. The only way to struggle through the central paradox of governance to produce something different is to accept this troubling interdependence between resistance and reproduction and between hope and loss. Analysing the everyday processes of this relational politics through original empirical studies in health, social care and education the book develops an innovative interdisciplinary theoretical synthesis which engages with and extends work in political science, cultural theory, critical race and feminist analysis, critical psychoanalysis and post-material sociology.

Book Forensic Psychology and Neuropsychology for Criminal and Civil Cases PDF Free

Forensic Psychology and Neuropsychology for Criminal and Civil Cases PDF
By:Harold V. Hall
Published on 2007-11-19 by CRC Press

Greater Understanding, Better Evaluations Today's increasingly sophisticated psychological and neuropsychological assessments allow for greater understanding and evaluations in forensic psychology. By integrating discussions of modern psychological and neuropsychological tests with extant civil and criminal cases, this book presents a unique resource for insight into the impact of modern behavioral science on the legal system. Foundational, Criminal, and Civil Issues Divided into three parts, this timely compilation of articles from national and international experts begins with foundational issues such as the legal, ethical, and applied aspects of mitigation evaluations. It examines violence prediction and risk analysis, violence in the family, and the detection of malingering and deception in forensic evaluations. Part 2 looks at the psychological issues found in criminal forensic evaluation. This section discusses assessments of competence to stand trial, mitigatory defenses, and hostage negotiation, as well as the psychological impact of officer-involved shootings. The final part focuses on neuropsychological evaluation as it is relevant to civil cases including worker’s compensation, malingered pain and memory deficits, and parental assessment in child maltreatment cases. Template Case Studies Providing several full case studies in more than a dozen appendices, this book addresses both psychological and neuropsychological concepts in the context of the legal system and allows for a practical understanding and application of behavioral, legal, and ethical issues in civil and criminal cases.

Book A Pragmatist Orientation for the Social Sciences in Climate Policy PDF Free

A Pragmatist Orientation for the Social Sciences in Climate Policy PDF
By:Martin Kowarsch
Published on 2016-09-01 by Springer

While economic and other social science expertise is indispensable for successful public policy-making regarding global climate change, social scientists face trade-offs between the scientific credibility, policy-relevance, and legitimacy of their policy advice. From a philosophical perspective, this book systematically addresses these trade-offs and other crucial challenges facing the integrated economic assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Based on John Dewey’s pragmatist philosophy and an analysis of the value-laden nature and reliability of climate change economics, the book develops a refined science-policy model and specific guidelines for these assessments of climate policy options. The core idea is to scientifically explore the various practical implications of alternative climate policy pathways in an interdisciplinary manner, together with diverse stakeholders. This could facilitate an iterative, deliberative public learning process concerning disputed policy issues. This volume makes novel contributions to three strands of the literature: (1) the philosophy of (social) science in policy; (2) the philosophy of economics; and (3) debates about the design of scientific assessments, including the continuous IPCC reform debate. This work is thus interesting for philosophers and other scholars reflecting on the science-policy interface, but also for assessment practitioners, climate policy-makers, and economists. The science-policy approach developed in this volume has already influenced the recent socio-economic IPCC assessment.

Women and right-wing movements PDF
By:Tanika Sarkar,Urvashi Butalia
Published on 1995 by

Feminism tends to identify women's political activism with emancipatory movements. Yet how can this view be reconciled with the current involvement of women in right-wing causes? In India today, violent communalism is pulling women into militant politics, particularly into the Hindu right. This book explores the supposed clash from legal, religious and political perspectives, and considers the questions and paradoxes that this provokes for feminism. It compares right-wing strategies and tactics with those of feminist groups, and considers the issue of violence, both against women and by women. It also examines gender and the Hindu right, including their relationship to religious processes, economic development, caste politics and constitutional crisis.

The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political & Social Science PDF
By:Vesla Weaver,Jacob S. Hacker,Christopher Wildeman
Published on 2013-12-30 by SAGE

Criminal justice has become a key way that citizens and communities interact with their state. And yet we know strikingly little about its political and civic effects. In this volume, scholars from several disciplines consider the consequences of criminal justice for democratic life in the United States. In particular, the contributors to this volume ask: 1. What are the consequences of America’s high rate of incarceration and criminal justice contact for citizenship and civic life? 2. What are the implications of the disparate racial impacts of these criminal justice policies for the political inclusion and voice of minorities and ability of their communities to achieve collective ends? 3. Does seeing how these policies shape the life chances of citizens and inequality of the broader society change our view of how the state operates and governs its citizens?

Book Postcommunism from Within PDF Free

Postcommunism from Within PDF
By:Jan Kubik,Amy Linch
Published on 2013-08-26 by NYU Press

While the decline of communism in the late twentieth century brought democracy, political freedom, and better economic prospects for many people, it also produced massive social dislocation and engendered social problems that were far less pronounced under the old regimes. The fall of state socialism led to enormously complex political, economic, social, and cultural transformations, and while political liberalization was a lofty goal, it was neither uniform in its effects nor unqualified in its benefits. Postcommunism from Within foregrounds the diversity of the historical experiences and current realities of people in the postcommunist region in examining how they are responding to these monumental changes at home. The original essays in this volume lay out a bold new approach to research on the postcommunist region, and to democratization studies more broadly, that focuses on the social and cultural microprocesses behind political and economic transformation. Thematic essays by eminent scholars of postcommunism from across the social sciences are supported by case studies to demonstrate the limitations of current democratization paradigms and suggest ways of building categories of research that more closely capture the role of vernacular knowledge in demanding, creating, and adapting to institutional change. A novel approach to understanding one of the greatest political and social transformations in recent history, Postcommunism from Within explores not just how citizens respond to political and economic restructuring engineered at the top but also how people enact their own visions of life, politics, and justice by responding to daily challenges.
