Arts & Architecture 1945-1949 PDF
By:Benedikt Taschen,David F. Travers
Published on 2014 by Taschen America Llc

Whilst others were still at the back door to modernism, John Entenza pushed the front door wide open. The charismatic editor of |Arts & Architecture| and initiator of the Case Study House Program was instrumental in making American architecture and modern American design known worldwide. In the decades after World War II, however, |A&A| covered not just architecture but also art, music, and politics, in brilliant, bold and enthralling reports. Thanks to John Entenza, who headed the magazine for two decades, this ambitious project produced a magazine that set whole new standards. |A&A| featured the greatest architects of its time, including Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, Eero Saarinen, Craig Ellwood, John Lautner, Charles & Ray Eames, and Pierre Koenig. This selection brings together all the covers and the highlights from the first five years of the legendary magazine and is an impressive contemporary document of modern American architecture.

Dutch Colonial Homes in America PDF
By:
Published on 2002-01 by Rizzoli International Publications

This lavishly-illustrated volume provides an unprecedented look at twenty-eight houses (plus eleven barns and other structures) built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by Dutch colonists in the north-eastern United States, primarily in upstate New York and along the Hudson River Valley, on Long Island and Staten Island, and in New Jersey. An authoritative work-- written by eminent experts in the field-- Dutch Colonial Homes in America explores the homes in their broader social context by focusing on the historical and religious forces of the times. This book is the first to investigate the meaning of the home and its aesthetics for the Dutch in America, and also the first to look at these homes as a form of art and craft and, importantly, the influence this form and these people had on the shape of the American house to come. The 200 spectacular new color photographs here are beautifully styled in a manner that recalls the paintings of Vermeer and evoke what might have been the ambiance of these homes hundreds of years ago.

Spaces Inspired by Nature PDF
By:Yashwant Pitkar
Published on 2014-01 by Axel Menges

Book & CD. Husain Lehri, the director of Super Book House, approached Yashwant Pitkar, teaching at the Sir J J College of Architecture in Mumbai, to bring out a book on a contemporary Indian architect whose approach is different from the run of the mill. Pitkar had no hesitation in choosing Shirish Beri who in a career spanning almost forty years has built works ranging from private residences to educational complexes and large public projects across India. As it turned out, this book is the result of an extensive collaboration between Lehri, Piktar and Beri -- Pitkar describes the process of making the book as one of slow and deep unfolding. What is most interesting about this book is its structure. Interspersed with the projects are Beris written and sketched expressions. Each set of two projects is bookended by his illustrated essays and poetry. The essays are more like collections of rambling thoughts, posers and anecdotes -- seeking connections between nature, art, architecture, and life. There is a seamless rhythm set up in the book that constantly keeps the reader acquainted with the architects outer manifestations in form of his buildings and his inner thought processes, integral to that creation. The opening essay, |Working with Wature ... Towards Sustainability| sets a tone towards not just architecture but life in general. Beri asks whether man's relationship with nature could become a universal archetype for a sustainable future. He advocates an approach towards architecture that grows out from the place and its spirit rather than imposed technocratic solutions. The book features about a dozen projects in greater detail, well illustrated with clear drawings, evocative sketches and excellent photographs accompanied by the architects own analysis of the design process and governing concerns in each project. The opening section of the book contains a note by B V Doshi and a foreword by Christopher Charles Benninger who was Beris mentor when he was a student at the CEPT in Ahmedabad. The Hirwai Farmhouse in Nathawade for himself, one of his earliest projects, is perhaps the best example of his avowed philosophy: spaces inspired by nature. The Sanjeevan Primary School and the Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species at Hyderabad display Beris playful and unconventional approach towards space organisation which is at once in harmony with the sites topography and natural features. Projects such as the Dharwad Engineering College or the Computational Mathematics Laboratory in Pune display a nuanced sense of structure, construction and meticulousness towards detail. In the closing section of the book there is an exhaustive list of projects with thumbnails giving a good idea of the full range of the architects work. Accompanying the book is a CD titled |The Unfolding White: Shirish Beris search for wholeness.

Bauhaus Weimar PDF
By:Michael Siebenbrodt,Elisabeth Reissinger
Published on 2000 by Hatje Cantz Pub

|In April 1919 Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany. Until 1925, the year it moved to Dessau, this was the meeting-place for the wide spectrum of often contradicory ideas, utopias and experiments that formed the basis of the institution's renown. With more than 400 illustrations, this book illustrates the achivements of the Weimar Bauhaus*the first time they have been given such extensive coverage in a publication. The main focus is on the outstanding works by students from all workshops, from the studies in the famous introducory cours given by Johannes Itten to the design sketches that have become classics today. Another section is dedicated to Weimar's important Bauhaus collections, especially the world's only authorised collection on the Weimar Bauhaus at the Kunstsammlungen zu Weimar, which contains more than 8000 exhibits. Finally, the original ||Bauhaus locations|| in Weimar are brought to life, such as Henry van de Veldes' art school buildings and Walter Gropius's memorial to those who died in the Revolution of 1848. Thanks to the great wealth of material, some of which is published for the first time in this book, what emerges is a colorfull, pluralistic world that contradicts the common idea of one single Bauhaus.|

Representation PDF Download

Representation PDF
By:Monica Ponce de Leon
Published on 2020-02-18 by Princeton University Press

Representation considers the cultural value, processes, and semiotics of architectural images. Beyond typical plans, sections, diagrams, and models, architectural representation carries historical and political weight. In the digital age, architectural representation has proliferated. Representation disrupts this exhaustive pace with thoughtful and rigorous investigations of image production in architecture. Contributors explore representation in its many forms of signification, including the instrumentality of drawings and models that anticipate buildings, the representation of buildings and the ideas exemplified in their fragments, and the manner in which buildings embody, reinforce, and promote cultural constructs such as inequity and oppression. Discourse is a biannual publication series that presents timely themes on and around architecture. A selective compilation of essays, interviews, roundtable discussions, featured exhibitions, photo-essays, and collateral materials—such as architectural models, sketches, and built works—highlight architectural culture, practice, and theory.

Bauhaus Construct PDF
By:Jeffrey Saletnik,Robin Schuldenfrei
Published on 2013-03-01 by Routledge

Reconsidering the status and meaning of Bauhaus objects in relation to the multiple re-tellings of the school’s history, this volume positions art objects of the Bauhaus within the theoretical, artistic, historical, and cultural concerns in which they were produced and received. Contributions from leading scholars writing in the field today – including Frederic J. Schwartz, Magdalena Droste, and Alina Payne – offer an entirely new treatment of the Bauhaus. Issues such as art and design pedagogy, the practice of photography, copyright law, and critical theory are discussed. Through a strong thematic structure, new archival research and innovative methodologies, the questions and subsequent conclusions presented here re-examine the history of the Bauhaus and its continuing legacy. Essential reading for anyone studying the Bauhaus, modern art and design.

The present book focuses on the models produced over the years and therefore offers a unique look into the creative process of the architects. Of primary importance is the quality of the designs and buildings which is already easily discernible in the models. What is also perceptible is the need to maintain and further develop the high standards which had already distinguished the early projects. The architects seek no short-lived trends or superfluous effects; on the contrary, what they consider of utmost importance is their sense of social responsibility which, in a firm of such dimensions, is translated into no shallow pathos but rather into a daily commitment. |Architecture is an art that is applied in society. The result is the product of a dialogue.| (Meinhard von Gerkan) Given the large number of the buildings and competition designs (from among 256 award-winning works, 98 have received first prize) not everything can be included in the annals of architectural history, but the essential components of their work and that of their staff cannot be overlooked: namely, the attention to structural details, the material-oriented design and a simplicity based on usefulness - all elements which, in the best examples cited, have attained a level of self-evident naturalness.
