'Macklin recounts, with beautiful detail, the following years of Narcisse's life and his transformation . . . a great read for anyone interested in Australia and its overlooked history' Ronan Breathnach, Irish Examiner 'A truly remarkable account drawing upon a version Pelletier gave when he eventually returned to his native France and also on anthropological studies of the Daintree people.' Piers Akerman, Daily Telegraph, Sydney 'An unforgettable tale of transformation and upheaval.' Stuart McLean, Daily Telegraph, Sydney A young boy abandoned in an alien landscape thousands of miles from home is adopted by local people and becomes one of them, welcomed into their community, marrying a wife and raising a child. After seventeen years, he is stolen back to his 'real' life, where he has another family, but dreams constantly of what he has left behind. This is the remarkable true story of a French cabin boy Narcisse Pelletier who, after disembarking from his ship the Saint-Paul with the rest of its crew in search of drinking water, found himself separated from his shipmates and in the end abandoned on the north coast of Queensland, Australia. Narcisse was adopted by an Aboriginal group who welcomed him as one of their own for seventeen years, during which time he had a family of his own. In 1875, though, he was kidnapped by the brig John Bell and was returned eventually to his family in Saint-Gilles, France, where he became a lighthouse keeper. Robert Macklin makes skilful use of Narcisse's own memoir Chez les sauvages along with new research to tell this extraordinary story. Robert is a Queenslander so knows the terrain and the people of the area in which Narcisse was left behind. Through Noel Pearson's Cape York Institute, he has arranged to meet descendants of the people who took the French cabin boy in and who know the stories of his time in Australia. Robert has also had access to a great deal of material on the early history of the Cape through the Australian National Library. He has drawn on the significant resources of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) in Canberra on Aboriginal culture and history in Queensland and the Cape. In addition, he has made use of Narcisse Pelletier's own writings, including his account of his time in Australia, as well as several contemporaneous accounts of the Kennedy expedition to the area, including one from a member of the party. The author has made several trips to Cape York and one to Saint-Gilles and Saint-Nazaire in France.

|A brutally real and unrelentingly raw memoir.|--Kirkus (starred review) War photographer Lynsey Addario’s memoir It’s What I Do is the story of how the relentless pursuit of truth, in virtually every major theater of war in the twenty-first century, has shaped her life. What she does, with clarity, beauty, and candor, is to document, often in their most extreme moments, the complex lives of others. It’s her work, but it’s much more than that: it’s her singular calling. Lynsey Addario was just finding her way as a young photographer when September 11 changed the world. One of the few photojournalists with experience in Afghanistan, she gets the call to return and cover the American invasion. She makes a decision she would often find herself making—not to stay home, not to lead a quiet or predictable life, but to set out across the world, face the chaos of crisis, and make a name for herself. Addario finds a way to travel with a purpose. She photographs the Afghan people before and after the Taliban reign, the civilian casualties and misunderstood insurgents of the Iraq War, as well as the burned villages and countless dead in Darfur. She exposes a culture of violence against women in the Congo and tells the riveting story of her headline-making kidnapping by pro-Qaddafi forces in the Libyan civil war. Addario takes bravery for granted but she is not fearless. She uses her fear and it creates empathy; it is that feeling, that empathy, that is essential to her work. We see this clearly on display as she interviews rape victims in the Congo, or photographs a fallen soldier with whom she had been embedded in Iraq, or documents the tragic lives of starving Somali children. Lynsey takes us there and we begin to understand how getting to the hard truth trumps fear. As a woman photojournalist determined to be taken as seriously as her male peers, Addario fights her way into a boys’ club of a profession. Rather than choose between her personal life and her career, Addario learns to strike a necessary balance. In the man who will become her husband, she finds at last a real love to complement her work, not take away from it, and as a new mother, she gains an all the more intensely personal understanding of the fragility of life. Watching uprisings unfold and people fight to the death for their freedom, Addario understands she is documenting not only news but also the fate of society. It’s What I Do is more than just a snapshot of life on the front lines; it is witness to the human cost of war.

These stories in The Gracious Afterward: Delta Stories, are of a by-gone era, voices from the deep beginning, are fiction, informed though in very specific and detailed ways by one who lived the times. The period spanned is approximately 1914-1922. The place: Mississippi, Washington County, and the American South. Hearing stories from an original source, to me, is sometimes like the soft hours before waking. There is dream; there is light; there is an awareness of where you are, or possibly are not. Morning is there as iridescent as lighted clock hands. The source and inspiration of these stories lived a long and lucid life, and she wished to remain anonymous. Call it modesty, old-fashioned as it is. But she was, and I hope, will carry her voice to future generations. Truffaut, the French filmmaker, said of director John Ford, |Ford was an artist who never said the word 'art, ' a poet who never mentioned poetry.| It strikes me that my dear subject who never ascribed the grandiose to her life, never thought of art, never thought of it as anything special, was a wellspring, a fount, a storyteller. I am a conduit, a writer fortunate to have known her, who's added some language, structure and detail to the oral history. Stories such as these call for only the most cogent of memories and memory. Many of the quotes, even swatches of dialogue, character traits, details, story elements, in fact, come directly from the storyteller. This writing is not necessarily to be construed as a typical plantation or typical representation of the period. Fact-checking over 100 years later isn't a parabolic path from start to finish. It brings to mind Henry David Thoreau who spoke of what he called the |residual truth.| I trust and hope that essence remains when the story changes to accommodate a form. Certainly, I must take responsibility for any breeches of detail, but I hope that anyone reading the book can feel the flood as we bask in the memories of a youthful, distant world, of some lovely, struggling, people in a distinctive world. - Irv Broughton

This comprehensive textbook provides an up-to-date and accessible account of the theories that seek to explain the complex relationship between brain and behaviour. Drawing on the latest research findings from the disciplines of neuropsychology, neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience and cognitive neuropsychology, the author provides contemporary models of neuropsychological processes. The book provides a fresh perspective that takes into account the modern advances of functional neuroimaging and other new research techniques. The emphasis at all times is on bridging the gap between theory and practice - discussion of theoretical models is framed in a clinical context and the author makes frequent use of case studies to illustrate the clinical context. There is coverage of the neuropsychology of disorders associated with areas such as perception, attention, memory and language, emotion, and movement. A third-generation text, this book uniquely aims to integrate these different areas by describing the common influences of these functions. Following on from this there is information on the clinical management of patients in the area of recovery and rehabilitation. These last chapters focus on the author's own experience and illustrate the importance of a more systematic approach to intervention, which takes into account theoretical views of recovery from brain damage. Neuropsychology: From Theory to Practice is the first comprehensive textbook to cover research from all disciplines committed to understanding neuropsychology. It will provide a valuable resource for students, professionals and clinicians.
